MNJ to Technology Entrepreneurship - Taimur Ahmed (1948-2024)
It is difficult to express just how much Taimur Ahmed meant to me as a friend. He wasn’t just a colleague or a companion; he was someone whose presence truly made a difference in my life. Taimur began his journey in the advertising world with MNJ under the leadership of Javed Jabbar, where he worked alongside remarkable individuals like Zohra Yusuf, Shahnoor Ahmed, Shabbir Mohajir, Mariam Ali Baig and Saneeya Hussain.
Eventually, he transitioned into technology entrepreneurship, bringing innovation to Pakistan by introducing the DC Pager. Even when faced with challenges, he confronted them with unwavering courage. Among his many achievements, Megatech Trackers stood out – a company providing essential tracking technology and tech support to logistics firms.
Although he often wore a serious expression, beneath the exterior was a deeply loving and caring person. His straightforwardness could sometimes be perceived as brusque, but those who knew him understood his genuine warmth.
He often playfully referred to himself as “Urdu medium” and jokingly said, “How can I be part of and excel in the company of an English medium crowd?” It was a reflection of his humility and the unique way in which he viewed the world.
In his final days, Taimur reached out to me about a topic that was weighing heavily on his mind. I vividly recall it was a Saturday when he called. Although I had guests at the time, he was eager for a private conversation, so we agreed to meet the next day, Sunday, at eight p.m. over dinner at my place. As he was always prompt, when he didn’t arrive at the appointed time, I became concerned. I called his cell phone at 8:20 pm, but there was no answer at first. Eventually, his daughter answered. I asked gently, “Beta, where is your father? We were supposed to meet at eight o’clock, and he’s not here yet. May I speak to him?” Her response shook me to the core: “Uncle, Baba passed away a few hours ago.” The loss was sudden, unexpected and profoundly heartbreaking.
A few weeks before his passing, I hosted a dinner in honour of my friend Rafiuddin Khan, who was visiting from the UK. I invited Taimur, along with his former MNJ colleagues. It was a truly wonderful evening, and the group photo we took at the end became a cherished keepsake. It captured all the prominent MNJ colleagues gathered together, with their remarkable leader, Javed Jabbar, at the centre. The photo we took for the occasion now holds a special place in our hearts, commemorating that memorable evening.
Taimur’s passing has left a void that words cannot fill. I will forever cherish the memories of our time together, remembering him not only as a friend but as someone who touched my life in ways that will stay with me always.
